Truth About Toothpaste

Ever since I was a can remember brushing my teeth, I noticed I would feel sick every single time. I never really understood why that was until I started my health journey. I studied everything I could about health and wellness and what I learned transformed me and gave me the passion I have to inform and inspire others.

Modern toothpaste has been around since the late 1800’s and originally contained lead. Over the years it turned into a toothpaste with a ton of ingredients (most of which I can’t even pronounce). Let’s dive into some of the toxic ingredients that you are using TWICE a day:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)- this is that stuff that makes products like soap, face wash, and your toothpaste foam up. It is linked to cancer, endocrine disruption and organ toxicity.

Titanium Dioxide- chemicals in titanium dioxide are known to have toxic effects on your brain. According to The International Agency for Research, Titanium Dioxide is classified as a Group 2B carcinogen.

FD&C blue no.1- This has been previously banned in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. You’d think that would be a cause for concern for us here in the US but it is actually “certified safe” as a food additive here in the US.

Oh and then there’s the Warning label- The Labels states that if more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact Poison Control Center right away.

Not saying I’m a toothpaste swallower or anything but sometimes it just happens. Luckily, I use natural toothpaste so its not an issue but what about kids who might like the taste and decide to swallow it because they are kids and will pretty much eat anything? Or what If you don’t rinse your mouth completely and realize after you take a nice swig of water that you just ate toothpaste?

You shouldn’t have to worry about that when using products because ingredients should be natural. That’s why I am going to fill you in on a few of my favorite natural toothpastes:

They even help whiten my teeth naturally! No, this is not an ad I just genuinely have had great success with those brands and I love their minimal (and non toxic) ingredient list. Since using these toothpastes I no longer feel sick when I brush my teeth and I can’t tell you how exciting that is for me.

I would feel nauseous every morning when brushing my teeth and that was an awful feeling to have every day. Chemicals and toxins everywhere but I try to do my best to be aware and limit those chemicals and toxins wherever and however I can. What you put in and on your body matters. Start being more aware of ingredients and make sure you are able to pronounce everything in that list. It can be a bit overwhelming at first but once you get the hang of it you’re golden.

If you are a DIY kind of person then here is how you can make your own natural toothpaste (and even save some money!)

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil

  • 2 tablespoons baking soda

  • 10-20 drops cinnamon essential oil

  • 10-20 drops peppermint essential oil

Mix ingredients until they become a thick paste and voila!
